RTÉ Call for Science Proposals, May 2015

As part of a new initiative launched by RTÉ and Science Foundation Ireland, RTÉ are now seeking proposals that have strong science themes at heart, dealing especially in the areas of technology, engineering and maths. In this instance we are looking for strong, one-off or multi-part documentary projects and one large-scale, science-based event project (for submission to the BAI S&V Round in July).

  • One-offs or multi part documentary projects deadline 19th June, 5pm. Ideally 3 x one-hours e.g. 3 x one hour on the same theme but open to suggestions.
  • Budget max €130k per project
  •  Large scale, Event-based science and technology project to be submitted to BAI S&V deadline in July, RTE deadline 12th June 12 noon.
  •  Budget max €750K, RTÉ and SFI support up to €350k.  Producers are free to interpret ‘event’ as they wish; there is no set duration. Can be multi-part, stripped etc.

Among the recent stand-outs on the RTÉ Science slate have been one-off popular documentaries like ‘Joe Brolly – Perfect Match’, ‘Power In The Blood’, ‘Unbreakable – The Mark Pollock Story’ and ‘Tommy Bowe’s Bodycheck’, as well as the multi-part series ‘Building Ireland’.

Science Foundation Ireland has outlined its goal to enable an engaged and scientifically informed Irish public. Recognising the potential of broadcast programmes to reach wide audiences, S.F.I. is keen to work with RTÉ in supporting projects that have general appeal and that are subtly related to science, technology and engineering.

These projects should engage people through real stories that relate science, engineering or technology elements and that have broad appeal.

All proposals should be suitable for transmission in the prime-time schedules on RTÉ One and should have strong, popular appeal, as well as being relevant to Irish audiences. Proposals can be authored or presenter led but we are not seeking personal profiles or science history pieces.

Proposals for the large-scale, event-based science and technology related project will, in the first instance, be supported in the BAI Sound & Vision round in July, 2015. This project, if successful through S&V, should ideally be ready to play across a given week in the RTÉ One schedules in the first half of 2016.

Proposals should, in all instances, reflect the contribution of science, technology, engineering and maths in contemporary Irish society through, for agricultural, human behaviour, natural history, wildlife, health, sport or environmental dimensions. These proposals should be far-reaching in their ambition, with the potential to be stripped across the RTÉ One schedules, feature live components and be multi-camera studio or location based.

Proposals are encouraged to broaden their reach and educational impact through supporting digital accompaniments such as websites, apps, social media for example.

Budgets for the documentary projects [which can be one-offs or multi-part] will be costed at a maximum of €130,000.

Budgets for the large-scale science-based event will be costed at a maximum of €750,000, with the RTÉ/Science Foundation Ireland contribution at c. €350,000.

Please note that budget ranges are indicative only and proposals that can achieve lower costs per hour will be particularly attractive. In the first instance, producers submit ideas into the RTÉ eCommissioning system

https://e-commissioning.rte.ie - under the programme category Cláracha Gaeilge Education & Science "Science". The closing date for submissions is Friday, June 19th at 5PM. (Strict Deadline)
